The great tit has a characteristic appearance with a black head and a black back of the head, conspicuous bright spots, olive top side and yellow underside. The great tit intelligently uses its appearance to defend oneself. The great tit lives primarily on insects and prefers to make a nest in a whole in a tree.
The great tit is a true songbird! It has up to 40 different callings and songs, but it is mostly the male great tit who uses these – especially when he tries to attract and impress a female great tit. The female great tit will most likely choose the male great tit with the most spectacular song.
Between April and June the female great tit lays eggs to hatch by herself, and both the male and the female great tit take care and protect their young ones in collaboration with each other.
